OUR LEADERSHIP

Dr. Mirriam Close (Executive Director)

Dr Mirriam Close is a Specialist Psychiatrist with MBBCh from the University of the Witwatersrand and is a Fellow of the College of Psychiatrists (FCPsych). She is a Master Certified Independent Medical Examiner as obtained from the American Board of Independent Medical Examiners. Certification has been obtained as a Mediator from Conflict Dynamics and the Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution(UK). As a Director of Behavioural Health Institute, Dr Close has been involved in training medical practitioners through psychiatric and medicolegal management workshops. Dr Close’s expertise has been sought by various media outlets to provide input on a host of mental health related topics.

Carien Human (Executive Director)

Carien Human is a registered counselling psychologist in South Africa (HPCSA: PS0119563). She completed her comprehensive training in DBT through the South African DBT institute and is currently training with Behavioral Tech. With her interest leaning towards adolescents and children, she also completed training in Play therapy, DIR Floortime, Sand Play and the Tomatis method.

Dr. Thriya Ramasar (Executive Director)

Dr Thriya Ramasar is a Specialist Psychiatrist in Private Practice in Johannesburg. She completed her MBCHB at the University of Natal Medical School in 1999 and then went on to attain her Fellowship in Psychiatry from The Colleges of Medicine South Africa in May 2008. She then attained her Masters in Medicine (Psychiatry) through the University of the Witwatersrand in 2011. Her thesis was entitled ‘Functional Neuroimaging in Survivors of Torture’.  Thriya also completed a Certificate Course in Medicine and the Law, Cum Laude through UNISA. 

She has worked as a psychiatrist in both the public and private sectors in South Africa and the United Kingdom. Prior to moving into the private sector in Johannesburg, Thriya was a Consultant Psychiatrist at Tara H Moross Hospital in Gauteng. She currently sees both in and outpatients with a wide range of diagnoses and is involved in training. She has trained medical students and registrars in the past and is currently involved in training healthcare providers. 

She is the current Secretary of the SASOP Southern Gauteng Subgroup, a member of PsychMG, a founding member of the HealthCare Workers Care Network and a Director at the The Behavioural Health Institute. 

Werner Teichert (Managing Director)

Werner Teichert is a registered clinical psychologist in South Africa (HPCSA: PS0123684) and Australia (AHPRA: PSY0002192885)(MAPS). He was trained in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) by Behavioral Tech, in Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT) by The Albert Ellis Institute (New York) and in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) by The Beck Institute. As the managing director of the South African DBT Institute, he has been involved in program formation, training and supervision of clinicians in DBT for the last 4 years.
